As long as you don’t expect to be paid!
In one week I will be joining 8% of the economically active population in unemployment. Not a fun or desirable prospect for a workaholic. I have never been unemployed for long before and believe this is because I will suck it up and find temporary work that is often less than perfect to tide me over while I look for that ever illusive dream job. However, I am now at the stage in my life where I want some security… A career, house, 2 and a half children… Actually giving birth can wait... but you get the gist! However once you make the decision to aim for a career rather than a temporary solution, it gets pretty tough. It’s a catch 22 situation that many young people are finding themselves in. Employers want staff with experience in their field and young people can’t get the experience without a job. For this reason Internships were created. Most companies are prepared to offer work experience placements or internships, its win-win as they get someone Eager to learn and don’t have to pay them! This can be a great opportunity to work for excellent companies and can occasionally lead to employment if they have a role going. I have worked for a marketing company in Cheltenham for the last 5 months, originally as an intern and now an employee and have learnt a huge amount. My boss is great and the staff are approachable, brilliant! Unfortunately Small marketing companies are struggling to make ends meet at the moment and they can’t afford to keep me any longer. I am now faced with competing against thousands of people with more experience in the marketing and PR world than me and have quickly learnt that jobs which seem too good to be true generally are. Often ‘marketing roles’ are actually door to door sales jobs based on commission with little or no salary. So while I search frantically for somewhere willing to take a chance on the underdog, I thought I would start a blog to fill the time I’m not spending writing application forms and see what happens!
If you’ve had similar experiences or want to offer me an amazing career (shameless I know!) I’d love to hear from you!
